Student organizations protest against Agneepath scheme at ITO in Delhi

Several organizations like Desh Ki Baat Foundation, CYSS, AISA, RYA, SFI, SVS, Aam Aadmi Party Youth Wing demonstrated against the central government’s Agneepath scheme at ITO today.

The students were Hhlding placards and raised slogans against the government and sat on the road in between the old Delhi Police headquarters and the Gate No 5 of the ITO Delhi Metro Station.

“The Agneepath scheme of the Modi government betrays the youth and weakens the army,” Krishna Yadav, Sanyukt Rojgar Andolan Samiti (SRAS).

All the organizations of the Sanyukt Rojgaar Andolan Samiti (SRAS) – Desh Ki Baat Foundation, CYSS, AISA, RYA, SFI, SVS, Aam Aadmi Party Youth Wing etc. participated in this protest.

AISA National President N. Sai Balaji said the government cannot silence voices protesting against a policy that will dilute security of India and professionalism of the Defence forces. “Agnipath will destroy lives of youth who will be hired through contractualisation in Defence forces,” he said.

According to SRAS, more than 150 protesters of the SRAS were arrested at the protest site by the Delhi Police and confiscated to Rajendra Nagar Police Station.

“The police not only arrested the peaceful protestors but also brutally treated them. It is clear from this that the central government also wants to suppress peaceful demonstrations,” alleged Yadav.

The Delhi Metro had also shut the entry of some of the metro stations such as ITO, Dhansa Bus Stand, jama Masjid in view of security measures.

The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday approved the ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme for the Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces. The youth selected under this scheme will be known as ‘Agniveers’. About 46,000 of them will be recruited this year.

The government  in a new development also raised the age bar of 21 years to 23 years for the scheme.
